Zippo Emergency Fire Starter Review & Giveaway

If there's one thing you can count on in life, it's a curveball.  Something, anything, inevitably goes by the wayside and you have to make the best of it with what you have.  So why get caught unprepared if you can help it?

With Zippo's line of outdoor products, you don't have to.  These days they are much more than just a lighter company and offer a full range of items that would come in very handy if you were ever caught in a natural disaster or emergency situation.  They have everything from windproof lighters to versatile woodsman tools all designed to prepare you for less the extreme elements.

The one must-have item I see in this line of outdoor items is the Emergency Fire Starter Kit.  This bright orange box contains water resistant waxed tinder sticks and a flint wheel which can ignite a flame in the harshest of conditions.  The casing is weather proof, which means you'll never have to worry about it getting wet.  Zippo was kind enough to give us one to try out, and we found it to be everything it promised.
I asked The Frugal Fireman to help me out with this review, as he is an AVID outdoorsman and serious hunter. He knows his stuff and agreed this kit was something he not only WANTED for his hunting gear, but more than likely NEEDED too.

It's very simple to use - first you pull out one of the wicks and spread out the cotton top. Then you make sure you're going to spin the flint in the correct location (see the photo - it's clearly marked on the fire starter). You then hold the wick next to the flint and start spinning the flint. On our first try the wick caught fire in less than 15 seconds!   In fact it ignited so quickly I jumped back, as I was expecting more of a delayed response.  The fire burned bright and clear after that, and did not smolder like I had expected either.  This would easily light whatever you needed to ignite, and quickly too.

In a case of not having any matches, or maybe having gotten your matches wet, this could be a real life saver.  We were seriously pleased with how well this kit worked and plan on adding one not only to the Frugal Fireman's hunting kit, but also to our emergency kit.  At just $9.95, I feel comfortable grabbing an extra one to have on hand, and should we use any of the wicks they also sell the refills for just $4.95.  Being prepared for the unexpected for less than $10?  I'll take it!

This is definitely one tool I would not want to be caught without.

Because Zippo doesn't want you caught without one either, they have graciously agreed to give one lucky reader an Emergency Fire Starter Kit of their own.  Simply complete the tasks in the below Rafflecopter form to be entered:
